KKIBO / Jo Abellera
Jo Abellera is the Los Angeles based maker and designer of KKIBO — a line of handmade knitwear, accessories, housewares and textiles.
She makes each piece by hand and finds inspiration working with color, texture, silhouette and natural fibers. Her work is also inspired by the work of mythologist Joseph Campbell and the shamanic stories of her Pacific Islander heritage. “Shamans bridge the material world with the spirit world,” she says. “By performing song and dance with these incredible costumes made from feathers, skins and furs, they could achieve a mystical communing with Nature.”
“For me and the woman I design for, there is a similar alchemy or transformation that occurs in the simple act of getting dressed. When you put on a KKIBO piece, there is a sense of communing with your femininity — a feeling of individuality and beauty.”

The KKIBO Studio and Atwater Village
I love visiting Jo’s studio in Atwater Village here in Los Angeles. It’s a cozy space in which I always spy something different and radical each time. Afterwards, I usually head over to Proof Bakery for a crazy good sandwich, lemonade and two chocolate chip cookies for the boys; then pop over to say “hi!” to Monica at Individual Medley and see their latest selection of curated goods.
