Opal is hydrated silicon dioxide - submicroscopic silica spheres bonded together with water and additional silica. Because of it's play of color, it was considered by all in the ancient world to be the most bewitching and mysterious of gems, worn for its virtues of soothing and strengthening the sight, healing diseases of the eyes, and capable of providing great luck, as it possessed all the virtues of the gemstones whose colors reside within it. In Greek mythology, opals were considered the stone form of the tears that Zeus wept after the defeat of the titans, whereas Indian lore considered it part of the Goddess of Rainbows after she turned to stone to avoid the romantic advances of other gods. The opal used in our 14K pieces is mined in Australia, the main producer of opal worldwide, however the opal used in our gold-plated pieces has been grown in a laboratory from a base of opaline silica, taking over a year to grow and "come into their colors." This slow growth results in a similar structure and material balance as natural precious opals, but with increased durability and structural stability.
Artist Marta Pia comes from a Spanish-Danish family with a soft spot for various creative outlets such as painting, sculpture and industrial design. With a respect and appreciation of the challenge and beauty of artisanal manufacturing, she strives to create works where their final outcome is based on materials and forms rather than on their final purpose, thinking about the meaning that objects acquire depending on their context, and value their ability to serve their purpose while looking timeless and effortless.
